The 10 Questions That Protect a $5,000 Purchase
Ask these on the phone, and ask for the important answers in writing (email is fine). A good seller answers all ten without flinching; evasion on any of the first five is your cue to keep shopping.
The Builder
1. Who actually remanufactures this unit?
Many "engine companies" are resellers. You want a name — and ideally an OEM-certified one. Here's who builds what, including why "AER" is the answer that means dealer-grade.
2. What's replaced versus reused, and is the engine's known weak point corrected?
For a 5.3 Vortec, ask about AFM lifters. For a 5.4 Triton, cam phasers. For a Hemi, lifters and cam. A real remanufacturer answers specifically; a reseller reads you a brochure.
The Warranty
3. What's the labor reimbursement rate — in dollars per hour, in writing?
The single most expensive fine-print line. Some sellers cap labor at $50/hr against $120–180/hr real shop rates, leaving you $1,000–$2,000 out of pocket on a "covered" claim.
4. Parts and labor, or parts only? Is it transferable? Commercial use? Self-install?
Each "no" reduces what the headline number is worth.
5. Walk me through a claim: who do I call, who decides, how long does it take?
Sellers with claim-friction reputations reveal themselves here. Check complaint platforms for the pattern, not the star average.
The Money
6. Total price: unit + core deposit + shipping both ways + payment processing fees?
Make every quote comparable. Hidden pricing or installer-bundled quotes (see Jasper) make comparison impossible by design.
7. What are the core acceptance criteria, and does my failure mode qualify?
If your block has a connecting rod exit wound, say so now — not after they inspect the core. Core deposits explained.
The Logistics
8. What's the actual ship date for my unit — in stock or built-to-order?
"Ships in 1–4 days" should be a commitment for your unit, not a slogan. Your vehicle is on a lift costing storage or your driveway costing patience.
9. Can any qualified shop install it with full warranty coverage?
And does the warranty require documented break-in or first-oil-change procedures? Get the installation requirements before your shop starts, not after.
10. What exactly do I need to keep? (Invoices, registration, oil receipts)
Most denied claims die on documentation. Create a folder the day the engine arrives.
