Why These Engines Fail: The AFM Story

If your 2007+ truck is here, odds are it's the Active Fuel Management lifters. The collapsing lifters that deactivate cylinders for fuel economy are the design's weak point; when one fails it usually scores the camshaft, turning a "lifter job" into a bill within sight of a complete engine. On 2019+ trucks the successor system (DFM, and the related L87 6.2 failures) made enough noise to trigger recalls and class actions. Gen IV and Gen V engines also burn oil via the AFM pressure-relief valve design.

This is why a quality reman beats both a used engine (same design, same time bomb, unknown miles) and a spot repair (the rest of the engine keeps its mileage). Ask any seller specifically: are the lifters and cam replaced with updated parts?

Replace vs. New Truck

A new Silverado runs $45,000–$60,000+. The worst case in the table above is roughly seven months of new-truck payments — for a truck you know, with a fresh 3yr/100k-warranty engine. Unless the frame, transmission, or transfer case is also dying, the swap wins. Full framework: engine replacement cost guide.
